Experience

May 2017 Together with the Youth ministry at church in the rural Eastern Cape, I started an agreement with local businesses in which school learners from poverty-stricken families were assisted with school uniform, warm clothes and transport to-and-fro school. August 2016 When I was the captain of the Y2K pool club, I attracted teenagers into the club and got them away from low-grade heroin. Feb 2006 Registering for Pure Mathematics 3 (University of the Witwatersrand) The class only had fifteen students. This course had abstract topics like Group Theory and Topology. Most students enrolled for Mathematics Techniques 3. Sep 2004 Silver medallist in volleyball (Knockando men's residence) Sep 2004 Gold medallist in touch rugby (Knockando men's residence) Nov 2003 Academic achiever of the year (Langa Senior Secondary School) July 2018– Currently Mathematics Lecturer/Tutor (Tutorials Campus) Braamfontein, Gauteng (South Africa) Permanent Intemediate Level position in the Teaching (Education & training) sector Delivering lessons to UNISA students. Instilling mathematical thinking. Teaching Calculus, Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Access to Math and Engineering Math. August 2017– Currently Online Mathematics Content Creator (The Student Hub) Cape Town, Western Cape (South Africa) Contract Junior Level position in the Teaching (Education & training) sector Developing Mathematic content for first year Mathematics students. Creating assessments including multiple choice question (MCQs), true or false questions, fill in the blanks, storyboards and step by step solutions. May 2016– Jan 2017 Online Mathematics tutor (YourTutor) Australia Contract Junior Level position in the Teaching (Education & training) sector Tutoring Specialist/Extension Mathematics and General/Intermediate Mathematics to Australian and New Zealand students on the YourTutor online portal. I applied YourTutor's Help - Not Answers Policy well because my tutees were able to solve similar or related problems on their own. The Australian Maths syllabus is more advanced than ours because at high school, they cover topics that we only encounter at university here in South Africa. Reason for Leaving: My contract ended. Oct 2011– Nov 2012 Mathematics tutor (Master Maths) Mthatha, Eastern Cape (South Africa) Permanent Junior Level position in the Teaching (Education & training) sector Tutoring mathematics on a full-time basis to students ranging from grade 4 to 12. Preparing what each student will do each day. Assigning modules, worksheets and tests to students. Marking worksheets or tests. Diagnosing students' weak areas and planning for their improvement. Recording each student's progress and doing telephonic or written reports to parents about their students' performance and adaptation to our computer system. I tutored students from grade 4 to 12 inclusive, this means that I know the syllabus of these grades and methodologies used in each grade. I got along well with the learners and interaction was with learners from varying backgrounds. I am now able to interact with school learners and can help them to become independent thinkers. Two of my learners who were on the Advanced programme mathematics passed with distinctions. My then manager, Eddie Mtoli, said that I was his best tutor ever. Reason for Leaving: The business was closed. Sep 2008– Apr 2009 Teacher (Department of education) Flagstaff, Eastern Cape (South Africa) Temporary Skilled Level position in the Teaching (Education & training) sector Teaching mathematics and physical science to grade 10 and 11 students. Education facilitation, setting learner assessments, marking scripts, composite schedule compilation using MS Excel and its commands. This is a high school located in a village next to Flagstaff in the rural Eastern Cape. At the school I was teaching three classes in which the smallest, according to the number of learners had seventy-five learners. The classes had an average pass rate of 77% in the subjects that I taught. The school is located in a rural village. I compiled a composite schedule for final grade 10 and 11 marks using Microsoft Excel and its commands (e.g, COUNTIF) to make summaries and analysis of results. This was before the introduction of SA-SAMS. For the first time the school had a schedule done on a computer.

Hobbies

Playing pool and Volleyball. Solving Math problems and Logic/Strategy games. I would like to equip the youth with the necessary mathematical skills required in further study and in the real world. I enjoy showing people that Math has applications and is not there to make lives difficult. For example, Trigonometry is applied in Triangulation, whereby the position of an object is determined. Math is not for a selected few individuals. With proper guidance, anyone can excel in Math.
